Week 7 Football: United South 27, Nixon 13
United South overcame its mistakes and took advantage of Nixon's to beat the Mustangs 27-13 at the SAC on Saturday night.
Despite a number of flags (the two teams combined for roughly 20 penalties), drops and a costly lost fumble on the Nixon 1-yard line, the Panthers (2-4 District 29-5A, 2-5 overall) were able to find the offensive cohesion that often eluded them earlier in the season as they piled 393 yards atop the Mustangs (1-5, 1-6).
Leading the way for United South was junior quarterback Robert Camarillo who threw 40 passes and completed 28 of them for 292 yards and three touchdowns from behind the excellent protection of his offensive line, which allowed Camarillo to be taken down only once behind the line of scrimmage.
Camarillo's favorite target of the night was wide receiver Orlando Contreras, who had eight catches for 104 yards and a single score.
The Panthers were led in the running game by sophomore Luis Castillo, who had 51 yards on 13 touches.
Nixon’s offense was able to produce 283 yards, but few scores to show for it as the Mustangs were intercepted twice and fumbled a third turnover away.
The Mustangs took turns with Manny Martinez and Joseph Contreras at the quarterback position until handing the reigns entirely over to Contreras in the second half.
Contreras finished with 89 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 10 of 19 passing, while Martinez threw for 68 yards on six of nine passing.
Nixon had seven different players carry the ball and was led in that department by Ritchie Rendon, who had 41 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts.
Mustangs wide receiver Danny Martinez had his team's lone receiving score among his three catches for 45 yards.
Wide receiver Jesus Perez led the Mustangs in receptions with four for 77 yards.
Always good for a bit of trickery, the Mustangs got their biggest play of the night on a reverse-turned-wide receiver pass when Perez found an open Danny Martinez behind the defense for 34 yards on a play which was nearly a 90-yard touchdown.
One Nixon player was injured on the night. Defensive lineman Larry Banda was hurt during a fake-punt attempt and left the field on a backboard.
It's the second loss to injury for the Mustangs, who also saw linebacker Robert Rocha go down for the season with an ankle injury weeks ago in a game against Alexander.

Week 6 Football: United 60, Nixon 0
The United Longhorns turned in another dominant performance Friday night, pouncing on the Nixon Mustangs and running away with a 60-0 District 29-5A victory at the SAC.
The Longhorns remain in first place in district with a flawless 5-0 standing. They’re 5-1 overall.
Nixon fell to 1-4 in district, 1-5 overall.
United scored on seven of its opening eight drives and the Mustangs were held without a first down until the final play of the first half.
The Longhorns pulled a majority of their starters from the lineup at halftime when the lead was 50-0, but that didn’t dilute any of the offensive statistics.

Other United offensive weapons were clicking at full speed as well. Running back Billy Williams III had 125 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries and wide receiver Nick Fuentes had 111 yards and two touchdowns on two receptions.
The Mustangs never got their offense off the ground against the Longhorn defense. Nixon finished the game with 128 yards of offense compared to United's 582.
Nixon’s offense was led by Ritchie Rendon, who had 36 yards on 15 carries, and Fermin Rendon, who had 38 yards on nine carries.

Week 5 Football: Alexander 48, Nixon 14
Coming off an exhilarating victory over Del Rio last week, Alexander didn't miss a beat as it got back to work Saturday night at the SAC, dispatching the Nixon Mustangs, 48-14, in a game that was never.
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start, scoring on six of their first seven drives.
Their efforts were often aided by Nixon mistakes, as the Mustangs fumbled on two of their first three possessions to twice give Alexander short fields to work with.
Alexander's defense started strong and only improved as the night went on, forcing four turnovers and holding Nixon to negative yards in the second half.
The Bulldogs' defense harassed Mustangs quarterback Manny Martinez relentlessly, though they only reached him once for a sack. Martinez completed eight of 19 passes for 27 yards and a single interception, in addition to scrambling for nine yards on six carries.
Mustangs head football coach Tommy Ramirez again reached into his bag of tricks to produce his team's biggest play of the night.
Early in the second quarter and down 27-7, Martinez threw a backward pass to Jesus Perez, who then launched the ball downfield to a wide-open Jesus Hinojosa.
Hinojosa ably caught the ball and reached the end zone just ahead of the pursuing defense for a 56 -yard touchdown.
Nixon running back Ritchie Rendon led his team in rushing despite having zero carries in the second half. The sophomore running back gained 41 yards on nine attempts, including a 17-yard touchdown run, in the first two quarters of play.
Alexander's offense slowed to a crawl in the second half, scoring only once in the final 24 minutes on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Brian Swain to Xavier Skaggs with six minutes left in the game.
Swain put up impressive numbers as he completed 20 of 33 passes for 243 yards and five touchdowns while being intercepted only once.
The junior quarterback also had an impressive 67-yard touchdown scramble when a play broke down on third-and-long.
Nixon’s defense spent most of the night focused on containing the Bulldogs running game and rushing the quarterback and they succeeded, sacking Swain six times.
Alexander sophomore running back Xavier Skaggs had only 50 rushing yards on 11 attempts, but contributed 108 receiving yards on 10 catches, three of which went for touchdowns.
Bulldogs wide receiver Bobby Bowen emerged as his team's primary threat in the second half, accounting for half of Alexander's second-half yards by bringing in four catches for 66 yards.
Alexander’s offense dwarfed Nixon's as the Bulldogs registered 389 total yards compared to the Mustangs' 140.
Worse news than the final score for Nixon was a severe lower leg injury to linebacker Robert Rocha suffered in the second half.
Rocha suffered the injury while covering a Bulldogs punt return and it wasn't clear exactly what happened to cause it.
The stretcher was called out to the field and Rocha was taken away by an ambulance for further treatment.
The game pitted two familiar friends against each other. Ramirez, in his first year at the helm of Nixon, and Alexander coach Joel Lopez grew up in Zapata together and attended the same high school.
Ramirez was also Lopez's defensive coordinator from 1999-2003 when Lopez was the head coach at Nixon then. Together, they won three consecutive district championships.

Week 4: Football: LBJ 30, Nixon 3
LBJ senior running back Ricky Flores continued to prove why he is the premiere back in Laredo Friday night when he led the Wolves to a 30-3 victory over the Nixon Mustangs at the SAC.
LBJ head football coach Oscar VillaseƱor said Flores' production was even more impressive because the Wolves had lost one of their top offensive linemen to sickness the day before the game.
Running behind the makeshift line, Flores rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. Most of the young tailback's yards came in the first half, when he ran for 99 yards.
Flores was assisted out of the backfield by fellow ballcarriers Luis Vaca and Jerry Ayala. Ayala's single carry went for 60 yards and set up the Wolves within the Nixon 10 for Flores' lone touchdown.
The Wolves attempted only two passes, by two different players, and quarterback Juan Perez carried the ball more often than he threw it.
Perez's two carries went for 39 yards, highlighted by a 27-yard option keeper for a touchdown.
LBJ's defense performed spectacularly throughout the night, limiting the Mustangs to only 156 yards of offense and forcing five turnovers.
Nixon quarterback Manny Martinez struggled to find consistency, in large part due to the continued pressure and shifting alignments of the LBJ defense, which sacked him four times.
Martinez threw for 96 yards and three interceptions, completing 11 of 22 pass attempts.
Almost all of Martinez's passing yards came on a 76-yard pass to Jesus Hinojosa, who was tackled just six yards shy of the end zone after an impressive run after the catch.
Heralded Nixon wide receiver Juan Hernandez, who returned from injury this week, did not have a single reception and hardly had a ball thrown his way all night.
A late bright spot for the Mustangs was the play of sophomore Ritchie Rendon, who rushed for 36 yards on seven attempts when put into the game late in the fourth.
The Wolves finished the night with 222 yards of offense.

Best / Worst Case Scenario Nixon
Nixon is coming off of twin 1-9 seasons but new head coach Tommy Ramirez has the team practicing hard leading into their opening game of 2010. Nixon was the dominant force in town for the first half of the past decade and Ramirez was a big part of that, coordinating the defense for many of those years. 2010 will be the first glimpse of what to expect out of the new Mustangs coach and fans are hoping he will have Nixon back in the spotlight before long.
BEST CASE SCENARIO
Nixon has had a strong quarterback competition through the off-season between Manuel Martinez and Joseph Contreras. In a ideal world the better player will have won out and established himself in time for the season opener on the road against Valley View and the runner up will be making himself comfortable as a valuable member of the wide receiver or running back corps. Valley View went 1-9 a year ago and is 2-38 over the past four years. A best case season begins with a stomping of Valley View on the road for a 1-0 record.
Nixon will face Cigarroa in week two of the season. Much about Nixon is a mystery at this point, but if the Ramirez can work enough magic into the Mustangs offense to stop the run they should be able to stop Cigarroa for a 2-0 start.
Nixon's third game will be the team's second road trip in three weeks for a match up with Eagle Pass Winn in Eagle Pass. Two road games in three weeks is nothing to laugh at, but a dream season will witness Nixon going 3-0 with a hard fought road win over Winn.
Game four is where things begin to get dicey. Nixon faces an LBJ program which is on the rise under coach Villasenor. The key threats in this game will be LBJ running back Ricky Flores and Wolves defensive tackle Jose Solis. Nixon lost this one a year ago 13-28, a revenge fueled victory would put the Mustangs one step closer to their bygone days of prominence and deliver a 4-0 record.
Nixon follows up its game against LBJ with a five week stretch which has “trouble” written all over it. The Mustangs face, in order, Alexander, United, united South, Eagle Pass and Del Rio with Del Rio coming on the road. Four of those five teams are likely playoff contenders, and Nixon is going to have to be hitting its stride at the right time of the season to emerge with wins during this daunting stretch. In a best case scenario, Nixon would emerge with at one or two wins during this five game stretch, and if I'm generous I could say the best case scenario has them sitting at 6-3 entering the final week of the season.
That brings Nixon to its final game of the year, the much awaited return to prominence of the Nixon v. Martin game. Rivalry games like this are always wild and unpredictable, but a dream season would end with a win over the Tigers.
Nixon's dream season in 2010 would end with a 7-3 record, a massive six win improvement over their 2009 campaign. It would be a year where the defense improves by leaps and bounds and where the offense rediscovers itself and gallops into the sunset with a potential Mustang playoff appearance.
WORST CASE SCENARIO
A worst case scenario for 2010 is one where coach Tommy Ramirez's energy fails to rub off on his players and the team's rut proves inescapable.
Even in the worst of scenarios I still don't see Ramirez faltering out of the door however, and the team should be able to pull off the win over Valley View in week one.
A nightmare year would see this promising start prove to be all for naught, however. If Nixon fails to find a way to stop the big bodies at Cigarroa they could suffer a week two loss to the Toros.
The nightmare would continue if, after one week on the road and another week of facing the Cigarroa offensive line meat grinder, the team was too battered and bloodied to emerge victorious over Eagle Pass Winn on the road. This would put Nixon at 1-2 on the season.
Worst case scenario would have Nixon dropping the game to LBJ and suffering a series of losses as it ran the Alexander, United, united South, Eagle Pass, Del Rio gauntlet.
The nightmare would reach its conclusion if a beat down and tired Mustangs squad met up with Martin for their rivalry game and season finale only to be blasted by a prolific Tiger passing attack to end the season with a third straight 1-9 record.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
It's hard to forecast Nixon as they have loads of potential, but not a lot in concrete. New coaching staffs tend to bring change with them and Ramirez is no exception. The energy which the Mustangs have been displaying in practice is reassuring, however, and it makes me want to pick a result on the higher side of the possible outcomes scale. Color me impressed by my pre-season impression of the boys in green, I see Nixon delivering a 5-5 season with at least one upset of one of the big boys. The Mustangs should be one of the most improved programs in town.

Nixon volleyball wins opener
The 2010 volleyball season officially arrived on Tuesday as teams across the Gateway City hit the court looking for their first wins of the season.
Nixon had many questions heading into its season opener, but quickly found the answers as it beat Zapata, 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 16-14, at the Richard Barton gymnasium.
The Lady Mustangs had to shake of the rust from the long summer months to experiment with their lineup to see which combination fits the team for another playoff run.
Nixon (1-0) had a deep offensive attack that was led by Erin Leal and Sammie Garcia, who combined for 21 kills to lead the Lady Mustangs at the net.
Zapata (0-1) was a formidable opponent that had a strong front row that kept pace with Nixon on every point.
The Lady Hawks were without the services of their head coach, Rosie Villarreal, who took a leave of absence for personal reasons and will be back on the sidelines soon.
The Lady Hawks’ offense tested the Nixon defense all afternoon long with three offensive dynamos that kept sending line drives to the defense.
Senior Brandi King led Zapata with 16 kills.
Also making a big impact in their first varsity game were Shelby Bigler and Kristina De Leon.
Bigler had five kills while De Leon contributed with seven.
Nixon libero Celinda Verastigui and the defense, however, stood their ground and kept fighting through the bombs that were launched by King and company.
Ultimately, in the fifth and deciding game, the score seesawed back and forth, but it was Nixon which pulled through in the final points of the game.
NIXON STATS: Erin Leal (14 kills), Sammie Garcia (seven kills), Roslynn Velasquez (17 assists, four aces), Liza Villarreal (17 digs), Celinda Verastigui (25 digs).
ZAPATA STATS: Brandi Kings (16 kills), Celina Mata (one kill), Shelby Bigler (five kills), Kristina De Leon (seven kills).
