The Nixon Mustangs and the Cigarroa Toros met at the SAC on Saturday night with both teams having something to prove.
The result was a down to the wire thriller.
The Mustangs thought they had put the final nail in the coffin when they recovered a Cigarroa fumble and took a three-point lead over the Toros in the final minute of play, but the boys from Cigarroa weren’t done yet.
With 56 seconds on the clock, the Toros returned the kickoff to their own 45 and then drove down the field to score a touchdown in the final four seconds to recapture the lead and pull off the wild win by a final score of 28-24.
Cigarroa improved to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in District 29-5A. Nixon fell to 0-2, 0-1.
The deciding play of the game was a stellar 20-yard touchdown strike from Cigarroa quarterback Victor Martinez to Jose "Disney" Garcia.
Martinez said it was faith in his team that propelled him down the stretch on the game-winning drive.
The Toros finished the game with 194 total yards of offense.
Mike Benevidez led Nixon in receptions with six for 116 yards and one touchdown.
The Mustangs finished the game with 154 total yards of offense.
